Let’s be honest; we’ve all played Episode. Whether you read scandalous romances in secret or pondered endlessly over a murder mystery with friends, you know just how addictive this game can be. If you’re anything like me, you’ve found yourself growing a bit tired of the same gameplay style over and over again. Perhaps it’s time to jump ship and find a new game that caters towards your unique interests.
Eleven apps that are similar to Episode are: Choices, Love Choice, Fictif, The Arcana, Love Island: The Game, High School story, Romance Club, Decisions, Is It Love? Drogo – Vampire, MY STORY, and Hollywood U. All of these apps can be downloaded for free on both iOS and Android mobile devices.
So we thought, why not introduce eleven games that are similar to Episode to you? You might find that these apps are just as immersive and perhaps more inclusive than Episode. What’re you waiting for? Open up that app store, and let’s get down to business.
1. Choices: Stories You Choose
Choices is an interactive game, similar to Episode, that allows you to make choices which influence your gameplay. The game has over a thousand playable stories, each with its own unique storyline and set of choices.
Choices has something for everyone. Sporting amazing graphics and an intensely immersive reading experience, this game is sure to captivate your attention from the second you download it.
The top five stories featured on Choices: Stories You Choose are:
- Most Wanted (Murder mystery)
- Endless Summer (Adventure-mystery)
- The Haunting of Braidwood Manor (Mystery thriller)
- Rules of Engagement (Romance)
- LoveHacks (Romantic comedy)
This game is available for download on both Apple App Store and Android’s Google Play Store. It is free but does have in-game content available for purchase.
Parental guidance is necessary if the game is being played by young children, as some stories contain mature content, such as strong language or sexual references.
There’s something for everybody in this free app, so make the choice to download it today!
2. Love Choice
Love Choice is a free app that offers a comprehensive collection of interactive romance novels. Unlike Episode, this game focuses solely on romance stories. So, for all you hopeless romantics, this might be the app for you!
While the app’s focus on one genre can be seen as its most significant sales point, it can also be seen as the game’s biggest downfall, as it significantly reduces the target audience.
What this game lacks in diversity, it makes up for in gameplay. In Love Choice, you will get the chance to:
- Choose your own interactive stories.
- Change the fate of characters through your decisions.
- Customize your story to be drama-filled, or more low-key romantic
- Build relationships with your fellow characters.
- Customize your avatar and design outfits.
- Immerse yourself in thousands of diverse storylines.
Every choice in this game matters, and you can replay stories to discover all the possible endings of each episode.
Say goodbye to watching re-runs of The Notebook! Now you can sculpt your own love story to swoon over, with the simple click of the ‘download’ button on your device.
This free app is available for download on iOS and Android.
3. Fictif
First released in 2019, Fictif is one of the lesser-known choice-based story apps. When you first open the app, you’re presented with three stories to choose from: Last Legacy, For the Love of Gods, and Catch Me in Miami. Each of these stories has intriguing descriptions, although the fan favorite seems to be the Last Legacy.
This app’s developer, Nix Hydra, seems to be devoted to promoting inclusivity in this app. There are many customizable characteristics, although the most forward-thinking one is giving players the ability to choose their character’s pronouns!
Each story has multiple love interests, and each character has their own path, complete with unique personality traits.
This free app is available for download on iOS and Android.
4. The Arcana
The Arcana was developed by Nix Hydra, the same developer who gave us Fictif. Similar to Fictif, The Arcana has a unique art style that sets it apart from other apps like Episode.
This app is a choice-based dating sim for iOS and Android. You are able to date either Asra, Nadia, Julian, Muriel, Portia, or Lucio. The mystery reveals itself in 22 segments corresponding to the 22 Major Arcana cards in a Tarot deck, hence its name.
While many apps like Episode have stories where you can choose your character’s pronouns and sexuality, it is not a common feature among the Episode community. The Arcana has a built-in feature that allows you to enter your name and pronouns almost as soon as you download the game.
The storyline in this game was well beyond my expectations and, in my opinion, was a lot less predictable than some other stories featured in different customizable story apps.
5. Love Island: The Game
Inspired by the popular reality TV show Love Island, this mobile role-playing game allows players to re-live a season of the show through the eyes of a contestant. The player then makes decisions, votes people out of the villa, chooses a love interest, and more.
With the TV show already being such a hit, it’s no surprise that everyone’s standards for this game were high, but Love Island: The Game exceeded those expectations. This app won the 2019 Mobile Game Award for the best storytelling app of the year.
The choices made by players heavily affect the ending of the season of this game. You’ll choose show-stopping, jaw-dropping outfits, play cheeky challenges, and get grafting in true Love Island style. And, of course, you’ll pick your partner in tense recoupling challenges in exchange for a chance to share intimate moments with them.
This game is not recommended for young players, as the language and content stay true to the raunchy nature of the TV show. Seasons 1, 2, and 3 are presently available to play for free on both iOS and Android mobile devices.
6. High School Story
Have you ever wanted to re-live the high school experience without the drama and petty fights? Or perhaps the drama is what you live for! Either way, this game will keep you entertained for hours. High School Story, an interactive story game, was developed and published by Pixelberry Studios in September 2013.
In this game, there is one storyline rather than a variety of stories to choose from. The gameplay allows you to throw iconic high school parties, go on romantic dates, and recruit classmates from different cliques to improve your school’s rating. There are over 30 characters to unlock, all customizable and with their own individual backstories.
Pixelberry Studios have also donated a percentage of their funds to The Cybersmile Foundation, a cyberbullying non-profit. They did this to help raise awareness for victims of cyberbullying, as this sensitive topic is discussed throughout the game.
High School Story is currently available on iPhone and Android devices, and you can purchase it through the App Store or the Google Play Store. High School Story is completely free to play and is appropriate for younger audiences. It should be noted that some game items can also be purchased in-game with your local currency.
7. Decisions
Decisions is a multi-genre choice-based story game where you get to decide the fates of your character and those around you.
This role-playing game really stretches your imagination and tests your decision-making abilities. You will be left questioning whether or not the choice you made was the right one. The suspense heightens the stakes and places pressure on you to pick the right thing!
These stories are so immersive; you find yourself living in the fictional worlds of the games, and being able to pick from countless genres allows you to live out your fantasy. The visuals in this game only add to the gameplay, and the animations are as smooth as butter.
The game is available to play in over 20 languages: English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Turkish, Korean, Arabic, Dutch, Finnish, Swedish, Filipino, Norwegian, Vietnamese, Thai, Ukrainian, Romanian, Polish, Kazakh, and Malay.
The top 4 games offered by this app are:
- Baby Highness
- A Naughty Proposal
- A Royal Affair
- Eat, Spy, Love
You can download the app on any iOS or Android mobile device via the App Store or Google Play Store.
8. Romance Club
Romance Club is a choice-based storytelling app. Due to the intricate nature of this app, every choice you make sets into motion a complicated series of consequences, and there are many possible outcomes.
This game gives players the option to customize their avatars, design fashionable outfits, and choose their love interests. The choices you make can influence your relationships – will you choose to be friends or enemies? Remember, your choices determine your fate!
The number of stories offered on this app is relatively limited, but what this app lacks in variety, it makes up for in quality content.
The four stories that are available to play when you download the app are:
- Dracula: A Love Story
- Heaven’s Secret
- Legend of the Willow
- Love from Outer Space
Each story has a different plot and a unique set of customizable characters.
You can download the app on any iOS or Android mobile device via the App Store or Google Play Store.
9. Is It Love? Drogo – Vampire
Is It Love? Drogo – Vampire is an interactive dating simulator. This type of game is referred to as an Otome (maiden game), which means that it is a story-based video game targeted towards women. The game’s goal is to develop a romance between the female player character and one of several traditionally male characters.
Like the other apps mentioned in this article, Is It Love: Drogo – Vampire has chapters, which are released once every few weeks. These chapters add to the developing storyline of the game. This app is unique because it follows one single storyline instead of having several different stories available to choose from.
While having one storyline might seem to be a flaw of this game, I’d argue that the well-developed plot completely eradicates the need for more than one story.
Is It Love: Drogo – Vampire allows players to customize their character and date vampires. The player’s choices influence the ending of the story and their relationships with those around them.
An otome game is rarely available in English, but this app rebels against this stereotype, making it incredibly fresh and unique.
Who should download this game?
- People who love fantasy and vampires
- Those of you who like manga or anime
- Players who want to discover Otome in English
This game is available to iOS and Android users, and in-game content is offered. It may be worthwhile to spend some money on the in-app offers, as this game is unique and provides a much-needed refreshing gameplay style.
10. My Story
My Story is a game where you choose your adventures and make decisions that sculpt your in-game life! Be careful what you choose… Always remember that one small choice can change the course of the entire story, so choose carefully!
Your choices will determine how well you get along with your friends, how popular you are, and even who you fall in love with!
This game allows you to customize your characters, from skin tone to clothes and even down to your character’s hairstyle. Players can use this to express their character’s personality through fashion!
The wide variety of stories offered by MY STORY allows players to see the world through the eyes of a wealthy celebrity, an anxious college student, a rich heiress, or even a successful businesswoman! The opportunities are endless, and this makes this app stand out.
Dozens of characters await your guidance. Hop into the world of fiction and fantasy, and make life-altering choices, all with the click of a button! What’re you waiting for? Download MY STORY on your iOS or Android device today!
11. Hollywood U
If you feel that you’re “too old” for a game like Episode or Choices but too young for a game like Love Island, you should try out Hollywood U. This game is the perfect choice-based story game for young tweens and teens.
In Hollywood U, players can be a director, actor, or model while dressing their characters in high-fashion dresses and gowns. As a director, you can direct blockbuster movies. If you’re not into that, then why not act in the blockbuster films yourself? Show the community why you belong on the A-list in Hollywood.
New quests are released weekly, allowing players to look forward to the updated storyline.
Hollywood U was developed by Pixelberry Studios. This video game contains mature content and is currently available for download on iOS, Andriod, & Kindle devices.
As with most apps that are similar to Episode, Hollywood U is free to play, but you can buy some in-game items with real money. Players also have the option to disable in-app purchases in their device’s settings.
Conclusion
These are just a few of the apps that are similar to Episode. There are many more that are available for download, but these are my favorite games of all the apps I have tried. I enjoyed every single one of these games and especially appreciated those who promoted diversity and inclusivity.
All of the apps mentioned above are entirely free to download and play, but most offer special choices that you can select if you purchase some in-game content. The drawback to this is that you may be limited to what choices you can and can’t make, which could influence your gameplay.
Now that you’ve seen how many games like Episode are available for you to download and explore, you better get out there and start playing! Just don’t forget about the real world!
